He will still do the 4 specials next year though. Any ideas for a replacement? Personally I would love Elliot Cowan to take over; he recently played Mr Darcy in Lost in Austen

I JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS ON THE BBC SITE

i am really upset

he's the best doctor I've seen, and his was my first doctor, which makes him special

I'm really confused to how the whole River Song thing is going to work out though

Just read about it   Glad we'll still get to see him for another year, but still... Not too happy about it! However if it feels right for him... I guess it's right! And we had (and still have to come) some awesome series!!

Edit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7698886.stm Vid of David announcing he's quitting.

Oh no! *Sniffs* David Tennant, you will be missed sorely!! You played the Doctor with such passion and fun that it won't be the same without you!

DT's always had that mad light in his eye and a cheeky smile on screen that I loved watching. But as a professional actor I think it's wise that he's chosen to part with the TARDIS instead of hanging on to the role for too long. There's many other good parts for him to play. He's already slated to star in the upcoming film "Einstein and Eddington". Can't wait to see what else he's got lined up.

I don't know if Lee could take on the Doctor's role full time but he'd make a good guest apperance on the show!

I was really sad when I heard this, but then remembered that I'd really liked Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and worried who would take over from him when he left, but David Tennant was even better! So you never know, we may have another treat in store.

Lee would be fab as the Doctor, wouldn't he!! Or Richard Armitage maybe??!!!

LOL

It's sad. I'll be very sad watching his last episodes. I grew to love David's doctor SO much. But I knew this was coming, and to me it feels like the right time. It's obviously right for David - and it'll be great to see him do some other stuff.

I don't care who becomes 11 - as long as they are a top class actor like Chris and David both were.

(Oh and I'm also confused about the River Song thing.)

Well my fav Doctor of all time used to be Tom Baker who also played a quirky & eccentric Doctor.
However like Claire has said David Ecclestone made the Doctor his own when it came back to our screens and David had big shoes to fill. And boy did he fill them!!

I rather like the idea of Richard Armitage too although I liked Paul McGann when he played a one off special I think it was?

River Song is a character who knew the Doctor in his future so saidthelee2 is referring I think to how did she recognise the Doctor in his past if he regenerated between the two events?

Yeah I know - that's what I don't get - and am wondering how, if at all - that's going to be explained/worked out. I'm pretty sure she mentioned knowing him looking older or something - and not a different regeneration, and he can't get 'that' old in just 4 episodes can he??!!!! *shrugs*

Might be that they skip some time between shows again, but I think it's more likely she did know a different regeneration. She never explicedly says she doesn't, she only says something along the lines of him having a haircut I think (I'm too tired to look it up now  ) and she obviously knew ALL about him, so a different regen wouldn't be that shocking. I think!

I'm not impressed with the choice for the next one I'm afraid. He doesn't do anything for me. But then I do like David Tennant. A lot.

I think he will do a great job but it was a bit of a shock to see someone so young! I love his quirky nature .
